Projects

DFG DFG-Priority Programme (SPP) 1158:

"Antarctic research with comparative investigations in Arctic ice areas"

Aims of the project are:
  • to identify and quantify sources of deep and bottom water formation in the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic Ocean
  • to investigate and understand the interaction of bottom water formation and its variability, e.g., by contributions from glacial melting in the western Weddell Sea (Larsen Ice Shelf) and in the southern Weddell Sea (Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf)
  • to determine formation rates of deep and bottom water and their variability (since1984) and estimate export rates into the South Atlantic, into Drake Passage and to the east across the Prime Meridian
  • to determine inflow of deep water into the Weddell Sea from easterly sources and their variability
  • to estimate the inventories of anthropogenic carbon in the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic Ocean using transient tracers (CFC inventories, CFC based transit time distributions) and their variability using data since 1984
  • to compare CFC based inventories of anthropogenic carbon with inventories derived with other methods (Delta-C*, linear regression, etc.)
  • to determine upwelling velocities and rates in the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic Ocean using Helium isotope disequilibria and comparison with other methods
