Greenland ice sheet – ocean interaction

Cooperative Project GROCE

Funding:
BMBF

Period: 2018 - 2024

Basal melt is one of the main sources for the increased mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet. This is mainly caused by the inflow of warmer water into the fjords with marine terminating glaciers.
There are open questions regarding the processes in the fjord and it is unclear how much of the basal melt stays in the boundary current or is transferred into the climate relevant ocean basins around Greenland. Here the amount and distribution of glacial melt in the 79N fjord, the Greenland boundary current and the basins of the Nordic Seas will be studied with the analysis of He/Ne isotope distributions.
