CO2 removal by alkalinity enhancement: potential, benefits and risks
Mission CDRmare, consortium RETAKE, WP 3.1

Funding: EU
Period: 2022 - 2027

One way to reduce the CO2 content of the atmosphere and thus the greenhouse effect is to absorb additional CO2 from the ocean. For example, by artificially increasing the alkalinity of seawater, the ocean's ability to absorb CO2 can be increased. The following aspects are examined in WP3.1:
Which regions in the ocean (upwelling areas, deep water formation areas) are particularly suitable for an alkalinity enhancement?
How large is the expected increase in CO2, how quickly will it spread in the interior of the ocean, and after what period of time can it be detected against the background of natural fluctuations?
