    - water mass formation rates and their variability
    - water mass spreading and time scales of spreading
    - strength of meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in the North Atlantic
    - impacts of changes in the MOC strength on oceanic storage of anthropogenic CO2
    - vertical mixing and dissipation at western boundaries,
      Midatlantic Ridge, hydrothermal vents, and seamounts
    - equatorial and coastal upwelling
    - climate relevant processes in the ocean
