Research Interests

  • Physical and biological drivers of carbon flux
  • Polar deep water formation sites
  • Pelagic particle and plankton dynamics
  • Regional carbon budgets

My research has an inter-disciplinary focus on marine carbon and nutrient budgets as well as on regional particle dynamics. On the one hand, this includes the influence of large and meso-scale oceanographic processes, i.e. subduction, eddies, and fronts, on the biological and physical carbon pump. On the other hand, I am also interested in nutrient remineralization processes associated with sinking marine snow. This includes specifically micro-scale element cycling within marine aggregates as well as the particle-associated microbial community driving this element turnover. In my research, I am using underwater optics and oceanographic sensors paired with (micro-)biological and chemical methods. I am closely collaborating with physical oceanographers, biogeochemists, and numerical modelers to develop my ideas within a broader context. My research areas include but are not limited to the Arctic and Southern Ocean, the South Atlantic, and the North and Baltic Seas.
